  2. The NARAS Student Music Awards are open to any individual student 
  3. or group of students without previous recording experience who 
  4. are enrolled in a U.S.  university, college or junior college.
  5. Tapes of compositions written, performed and recorded entirely 
  6. by students are submitted each year from all over the U.S.  
  7.  
  8. Students enter in one of five categories: 
  9. popular/contemporary (pop, rock, R&B, urban); 
  10. traditional (country, bluegrass, folk, blues); jazz/big band; 
  11. classical/new music; and an open category reserved for 
  12. compositions, special instrumentation or ensemble 
  13. material that does not fall into the other categories.

  15. Winners and their colleges receive education grants and 
  16. other awards of recognition from the Recording Academy.  
  17. Grants made directly to the sponsoring institution are used 
  18. to award scholarships in the recording arts and sciences.
