The NARAS Student Music Awards are open to any individual student
or group of students without previous recording experience who
are enrolled in a U.S. university, college or junior college.
Tapes of compositions written, performed and recorded entirely
by students are submitted each year from all over the U.S.
Students enter in one of five categories:
popular/contemporary (pop, rock, R&B, urban);
traditional (country, bluegrass, folk, blues); jazz/big band;
classical/new music; and an open category reserved for
compositions, special instrumentation or ensemble
material that does not fall into the other categories.
Winners and their colleges receive education grants and
other awards of recognition from the Recording Academy.
Grants made directly to the sponsoring institution are used
to award scholarships in the recording arts and sciences.
